Different Types Of Custom Letterman Patches
Chenille and embroidered patches aren’t just two styles, they’re built differently, and that changes what each one is good for.
- Chenille patches use 100 percent acrylic looped yarn, with a loop height of 3mm to 4mm, sewn onto a 1.5mm thick acrylic felt base. This gives the thick, fuzzy texture people picture when they think of a classic varsity letter. It suits big block letters and bold, simple shapes, but text needs to stay above 12mm to stay readable.
- Embroidered patches use 40 weight polyester or rayon thread stitched onto a poly twill base. The stitch sits flatter than chenille and holds much finer detail, down to text as small as 4mm. This is the better choice for logos, crests, or anything with small lettering.
- Combination patches layer chenille and embroidery on one piece, usually a chenille letter with an embroidered mascot or crest stitched into it. A lot of our orders come through this way.
Backing options work the same across both patch types. Iron-on is a heat activated adhesive for home application. Heavy-duty sew-on stitches directly into the jacket shell for a permanent hold. Hook and loop backing lets a patch move between jackets or get swapped out each season.

For iron-on application, heat press at 160°C to 170°C, that’s 320°F to 340°F, for 15 to 20 seconds at around 40 PSI. Use a pressing cloth over the patch and skip the steam. Let it cool fully before flexing the fabric.
For sew-on backing, needle choice depends on the jacket shell. A 70/10 needle runs fine on standard wool bodies. Heavier leather shells need the extra strength of an 80/12.
